Sugar Island

The journey to adulthood of Makenya, a pregnant young girl of Dominican-Haitian descent.

Sugar Island tells the story of Makenya, a pregnant young girl of Dominican-Haitian descent living in Batey, a community surrounded by sugar cane fields. The mechanisation of the sugar industry threatens to displace the workers. Makenya participates in protests to defend the rights of the workers, and this process turns into her journey to adulthood. As Makenya's body expands, the final sapphire hand takes place, the harvest ends, and the cry of her baby heralds a new world. The film addresses the transformation she goes through during this challenging process and the difficulties she encounters.

The film is structured to provide the viewer with an emotional experience. The challenges Makenya faces and the courage she shows in the face of these challenges allow the viewer to empathise. Additionally, the impressive reflection of local culture and traditions in the film attracts the viewer's interest.

The film was shot in the Dominican Republic, in the Batey community where the sugar cane fields are located.
