Author Lola Lafon spends a night in Anne Frank's hideout, and this experience inspires her to create a book and a documentary.

When You Listen to This Song

In August 2021, Lola Lafon spent a solitary night at the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam, where the young girl hid with her family and four friends from 1942 to 1944. From this profound experience, a book titled "When You Listen to This Song" was born, bringing together Anne Frank's life, the author's search for identity, and the memory of a young victim of the Cambodian genocide. Now, Mona Achache is turning this book into a documentary film in collaboration with Lola Lafon. Through a night of shooting, Lafon revisits her book and her roots. Through a mix of hybrid images, the film takes viewers on an inner and universal journey about freedom, the figure of Anne Frank, and the power of writing against oblivion.

The film leaves a deep impact on viewers and sheds new light on Anne Frank's life and history. It also provides a comprehensive look at the power of writing and authorship as a way to fight oblivion and make sense of history's pains.

The film was shot at the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam.
