"Journey to Ranshima" tells the story of Yoshio, a single musician living in Tokyo, who returns to his hometown after his mother Michiko's suicide attempt and enters a fake marriage with Maki, whom he just met. Yoshio meets Maki one night at the Tama River and takes her back to his hometown, Ranshima. However, while his mother Michiko is in a coma, Yoshio introduces Maki as his wife to his brother Satoshi. Yoshio, who is in stark contrast to Satoshi, a company employee, has no money and all he can do is show his face. Yoshio and Maki's fake married life begins. The film offers a thoughtful look at family relationships, reality, and lies. The audience watches how Yoshio and Maki's fake marriages evolve and the difficulties they face during this process. The film was shot in the Shinjuku and Ranshima regions of Japan.
