Zoret, a famous painter from Paris, is at the peak of his talent. His biggest source of inspiration and his model is the handsome and young Eugene Michael. Zoret sees Michael not only as a student, but also as a person he loves with a quiet admiration. However, their lives change when Russian Countess Zanikow asks Zoret for a portrait. Countess Zanikow and Michael fall in love with each other right in front of Zoret's eyes. This situation causes great disappointment for Zoret. Even Michael and Zanikow accuse Zoret of theft and he remains silent about this situation. Zoret, left by Michael, becomes a broken man but manages to create one last masterpiece in his solitude - Hiob. The whole city admires Zoret's genius, but Michael is not even present at the most important opening.
