Sugar Island tells the story of Makenya, a pregnant young girl of Dominican-Haitian descent living in Batey, a community surrounded by sugarcane fields. The mechanization of the sugar industry threatens to displace the workers. Makenya joins protests to defend the rights of the workers, a process that becomes her journey to adulthood. As Makenya's body expands, the final hand sapphire takes place, the harvest ends, and the cry of her baby heralds a new world. The film addresses the transformation Makenya goes through during this challenging process and the hardships she faces.

The film is structured to provide the viewer with an emotional experience. The difficulties Makenya faces and the courage she shows in the face of these challenges enable the viewer to empathize. The film was shot in the Dominican Republic, in the Batey community where the sugarcane fields are located.
